Looking for a Literary Getaway?

It’s summer! The perfect time for a literary getaway!

Whether you dream of experiencing the setting of a beloved book, being inspired by a literary legend, or following in the footsteps of your favorite writer, you’ve got options!

The Agatha Christie Suite at the Rivertown Inn
If, like me, you’re an Agatha Christie fan who’s dreamed of taking a ride on the Orient Express, the Rivertown Inn in Stillwater, Minnesota has the perfect room for you. In addition to the Agatha Christie Carriage House Grand Suite, they also offer six more suites and two bedchambers featuring literary-inspired decor, including the Jane Austen Suite and the Lewis Carroll Bedchamber.

The Hobbit House at The Shire of Montana

Or maybe you’re a Tolkien fan but you can’t make it all the way to the Hobbit Motel in New Zealand? Try the Hobbit House at The Shire of Montana, but watch out for trolls!

The Stanley Hotel

Perhaps you’re looking for an “extra” experience while staying at an elegant hotel? Although it inspired Stephen King’s THE SHINING, The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado claims there are only happy ghosts haunting its various rooms.

The JK Rowling room at the Sylvia Beach Hotel

Whatever your bookish tastes, the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Nye Beach, Oregon is bound to have a room you'll love. Each of its twenty guest rooms is named after a well known author. Amy Tan and Ken Kesey’s Cuckoo’s Nest are two of the latest additions.

The Grand Jane Austen Suite at the Booklovers' B&B
If a B&B is more your style there’s the literary-themed Alexander House Booklovers’ Bed & Breakfast in Princess Anne, Maryland where the rooms offer “a creative interpretation of a famous author’s own room in his or her own time.”

The Titania and Oberon room at Inn BoonsBoro

Another Maryland option is best-selling romance novelist Nora Robert’s Inn BoonsBoro where the rooms are named for famous literary couples.

The Toni Morrison Room at the Akwaaba B&B DC

In nearby Washington DC, the Akwaaba Bed and Breakfast DC offers eight unique guest rooms decorated and tailored around African American authors and classic genres.

The Ernest Hemingway Cottage at Authors Guesthouse
In Florida, Authors Key West Guesthouse honors the literary masters who called Key West home.

Twihard to get some sleep
If Florida sounds too sunny, there’s always Forks, Washington where you can stay in one of the Pacific Inn Motel’s Twilight-themed rooms.

The Eloise Suite at The Plaza

Or maybe you’d prefer an urban adventure in New York City? At The Plaza Hotel you can choose from THE GREAT GATSBY inspired Fitzgerald Suite or the perfectly pink Eloise Suite.

And if you're going to be in NYC, you have to check out the legendary Algonquin Hotel and have a seat at The Round Table.

"The Gables"

If you’d rather emulate a current writer of kid lit, the former home where Zilpha Keatley Snyder wrote many of her books is now a gorgeous B&B known as The Gables Wine Country Inn.

Maybe you’re a Laini Taylor fan who’d love to stay in one of the Portland area hotels she retreated to while working on the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE trilogy? You can read about stays at the Inn at Manzanita, the Ace Hotel and the Hotel Vintage Plaza on her blog (she also gives some great retreat advice here).

If you've got a large group you could book the The Rusty Moose Lodge in Branson, Missouri where a gaggle of twenty-three YA writers including Maggie Stievfater, Carrie Ryan, Kiersten White, and Beth Revis got snowed-in on a writing retreat.

Springfield Castle in County Limerick, Ireland also hosted a group of YA authors and has the added bonus of being near the Cliffs of Moher (known as the Cliffs of Insanity in the movie version of THE PRINCESS BRIDE, they're also featured in the movie HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE).

St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City, Nevada, has hosted a number of kid lit luminaries (and possibly a few ghosts) while serving as the venue for the Nevada SCBWI Mentor Program founded by Ellen Hopkins and Suzanne Morgan Williams.

The Writing Barn in Austin, Texas has seen its share of award-winning authors on retreat and also offers some amazing workshops if you're looking for more than just a vacation.

Last but not least, you can rent the cabin the Original YA Muses stayed in at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado!

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

Wherever your literary adventures take you, I hope you have a wonderful summer!

I'm not nearly cool enough to be a Tolkien fanatic, but I'd totally visit the Hobbit House. Look how bright! Colorful! These are all awesome ideas, Kristen!
